Once again our nation is faced with an incomprehensible tragedy in a public school. As an elementary school principal, this event has caused me to reevaluate my school’s crisis plan. The principal of Sandy Hook Elementary had just implemented new safety procedure for the school, similar procedures I have in my school. One would think that the precautionary measures taken would have made for a safe and conducive environment for learning. How do we protect our students from such horrific events? This question will ponder the minds of all educators and political leaders in weeks to come.
We will never forget the heroism the principal took to protect students while sacrificing her own life. I believe our nation should take a closer look at safety in our schools. In addition, we need to take a closer look at the metal health field and in the sale of assault rifles to citizen. There is nothing wrong with having protection, but why do we need weapons in our homes that are utilized by the military?
